Motorsport rules, race strategy and the career ladder

A motor race is decided as much by rules and strategy as by speed. Flags and safety cars control the track, qualifying sets the grid, a points system turns finishing positions into a championship, and tyres, pit stops and the weather decide how a race unfolds. These guides explain those rules, mostly as Formula 1’s regulations set them out, and the techniques behind them: the racing line, slipstreaming and car setup.

They sit alongside Car Racing - Pro Career Racer, our motorsport career game, which starts in karting and junior racing and leaves the steering to a race simulation while you make the race-day calls.

Our motorsport app

Car Racing - Pro Career Racer is a decision game, not a driving game: during a simulated race you choose when to attack, defend or hold position, how to brake into a corner, which line to take and when to pit, while tyres, fuel, weather and cautions change the picture. Every circuit is fictional.

Where to start

  • Start with the flags

The flags guide explains what each flag tells a driver, and the safety car guide covers what happens when the race is neutralised.

  • Then the weekend

The qualifying guide explains how the grid is set, and the points-systems guide how results become a championship.

  • Then strategy and technique

The guides to tyre strategy, the undercut and overcut, wet-weather racing, the racing line, slipstreaming and car setup explain the choices that decide a race, and the career-ladder guide shows how drivers rise from karting.

Motorsport: common questions

What is Car Racing - Pro Career Racer?
A motorsport career game without steering controls. Races are simulated and you make the decisions that change the result — attacking, defending, braking, racing lines, tyres, fuel and pit stops — while the career climbs from karting and junior racing through professional motorsport, with contracts, teammates, rivals, the media and sponsors along the way.
Are the circuits in Car Racing - Pro Career Racer real?
No. The game races on fictional circuits, each with its own layout, corner types, surface and climate, and speeds can be shown in mph or km/h.
Do these guides follow one championship’s rules?
Mostly Formula 1’s, because the FIA publishes its sporting regulations in full, and each guide cites the regulations it relies on. Other series set their own rules, so check the regulations of the championship you follow.
