Kill based. Points per enemy destroyed. Now aggression pays, and there is a real tension: staying alive is necessary but not sufficient.

Most games combine these. The one that dominates is the one your strategy should follow.
Multipliers make consistency the priority
When a chain multiplies your score and breaks on a miss, the arithmetic changes completely.
A large multiplier makes every subsequent point worth several. Breaking it does not cost you the points you missed — it costs you the amplification on everything that follows.
The consequence: the safe play that maintains the chain usually beats the aggressive play that risks it, even when the aggressive play would score more in isolation.
This is why high-level play in chain-scoring games often looks conservative in moments where a casual player would push. The chain is the asset; the individual kill is not.
Risk is a resource with a variable price
The same risky action is correct in one moment and wrong in another. What changes is the cost of failure.

That last row is the one people miss. If your run is already worse than your record, there is nothing to protect — the conservative play produces a score you do not want anyway, so risk is free.

Routing beats reacting
The biggest available improvement is usually not faster reactions. It is deciding in advance how to handle sections you have seen before.
Reactions have a ceiling. A plan does not.
Practically:
- Identify the sections that cost you runs. These are usually few.
- Decide in advance where you will be positioned, which resources you will spend, and what you will not attempt.
- Execute the plan rather than improvising, even when improvising looks tempting.

Resource timing
Games with limited-use abilities — a shield, a bomb, a charged attack — turn scoring into a resource-allocation problem.
The common error is spending defensively at the first sign of pressure. A resource used to escape a situation you could have positioned out of is a resource unavailable for the section that genuinely needs it.
The habit worth building: before spending, ask whether positioning would have solved it. If yes, save the resource and fix the positioning.
Endless modes
An endless mode makes the risk calculation continuous rather than staged. There is no finish line, so the run ends when you make a mistake — and the question is how much risk you are willing to carry indefinitely.
The equilibrium most players settle on: conservative baseline, with selective aggression in the sections you have routed. Uniform aggression ends runs early; uniform caution has a ceiling.
