Routing beats reacting

The biggest available improvement is usually not faster reactions. It is deciding in advance how to handle sections you have seen before.

Reactions have a ceiling. A plan does not.

Practically:

  • Identify the sections that cost you runs. These are usually few.
  • Decide in advance where you will be positioned, which resources you will spend, and what you will not attempt.
  • Execute the plan rather than improvising, even when improvising looks tempting.

Resource timing

Games with limited-use abilities — a shield, a bomb, a charged attack — turn scoring into a resource-allocation problem.
