The shoot 'em up is one of the few video game genres old enough to have been declared dead several times and stubborn enough to have outlived each obituary. It has changed hardware three times, changed continents, changed business model, and changed its own difficulty philosophy twice — while asking the same question the whole way through.
That question is not can you shoot the thing. It is where are you going to be standing when the thing shoots back.
Before the genre had a name
In 1962, a group of programmers at MIT wrote Spacewar! on a PDP-1, a room-sized minicomputer with a circular vector display. Two ships, a star with gravity, torpedoes, and a limited fuel supply. It was written to show off the machine, it was never sold, and it spread by being copied onto other PDP-1 installations by people who wanted to play it.
Two things about Spacewar! matter for everything that followed. It established that a screen could hold a hostile object with its own motion and its own agenda, and it established that the interesting part was manoeuvring rather than aiming. Both ideas went dormant for the better part of a decade while the technology to sell them caught up.
Space Invaders turned it into a genre
Space Invaders, developed by Tomohiro Nishikado and released by Taito in Japan in 1978, is where the commercial genre starts. A single ship at the bottom of the screen. A grid of aliens descending. Four destructible shields, and a score.
The design is worth examining because so much of it became the default. The player cannot advance; the threat advances instead. The enemy formation moves as a unit, so its behaviour is legible. The shields degrade, which means safety is a consumable rather than a place. And the game cannot be won — only survived longer — which converts the entire experience into a score.
There is also a famous accident in it. The aliens accelerate as you destroy them, and the acceleration was not authored: with fewer sprites left to draw, the hardware simply had less work to do per frame and ran the remaining ones faster. The team kept it. Difficulty that rises as the player succeeds turned out to be exactly the pacing curve the format needed, and designers have been building it deliberately ever since.
The early 1980s pulled the form in five directions at once
The years immediately after Space Invaders were the genre's most experimental period, and nearly every structural variant that still exists was invented in them.
- Namco's Galaxian (1979) broke the formation. Enemies peeled off the grid and dived at the player individually, which meant the threat was no longer a single legible block. Galaga (1981) extended that with capture-and-rescue and a bonus stage that rewarded pattern knowledge rather than survival.
- Atari's Asteroids (1979) removed the fixed axis altogether. Momentum-based movement in open space made positioning a physics problem, and the screen wrapped, so there was no edge to hide against.
- Williams Electronics' Defender (1980), designed by Eugene Jarvis, introduced horizontal scrolling and a radar strip showing the part of the world you were not looking at. It is the first widely played shooter where the play area was larger than the screen.
- Atari's Tempest (1981) projected the whole thing down a tube, so the enemies climbed toward the camera instead of across it.
- Namco's Xevious (1982) split threats into air and ground targets requiring different weapons, and scrolled vertically over what read as terrain rather than empty space.
- Williams' Robotron: 2084 (1982), also from Jarvis with Larry DeMar, gave the player two joysticks: one to move, one to aim. Separating movement from firing is the design decision the entire twin-stick lineage rests on.
What all six share is that they took the survival problem and rotated it. None of them made shooting more interesting. They made being somewhere more interesting, which is a strong hint about where the genre's actual content lives.
Why scrolling stuck
Automatic scrolling was not a technical inevitability — Asteroids and Robotron both prove that. It won because it hands pacing control to the designer.
When the camera advances at a fixed rate, the sequence and the timing of every encounter is guaranteed. That makes patterns learnable, makes difficulty curves precise, and makes a run comparable to every other run of the same game. The cost is exploration, and the genre decided very early that choreography was worth more.
Power-ups turned a run into a build
By the mid-1980s the survival layer was well understood, and the next move was to put something on top of it.
Konami's Gradius (1985) is the clearest example. Destroying certain enemies dropped capsules that advanced a selector along a bar at the bottom of the screen — speed, missile, double, laser, option, shield — and you chose when to cash it in. That is a resource management game running underneath a shooter, and it introduced a genuinely painful decision: spend now on something small, or wait and risk dying before the good one.
Irem's R-Type (1987) went the other way and gave you one thing: a detachable pod that could be docked front or rear, absorbed fire, and fired independently. Instead of a shopping list, a single object whose placement was the whole tactical layer.
These two approaches — accumulate a build, or master one tool — still describe most of what modern arcade shooters do with progression. The lineage runs directly into contemporary phone games. Space Shooter - Galaxy Arcade sits on the accumulate side: rewards earned during a run go into weapons, unlocked upgrades, ship systems and bonuses you pick yourself, so the ship you launch with next time is a different ship.
Scoring became a second game
Somewhere in the 1990s, top-level players stopped treating survival as the objective. If you can reliably finish a game, the only remaining challenge is how you finish it, and designers responded by building scoring systems complex enough to be worth studying on their own.
Chain scoring is the canonical example: destroy enemies in quick succession and a multiplier climbs, break the rhythm and it resets. This inverts the safety incentive. The safe route through a wave and the high-scoring route through it are deliberately different, and the player chooses their own difficulty by choosing how greedy to be.
Treasure's Radiant Silvergun (1998) built an elaborate weapon-and-chain system around destroying enemies in colour order. Its successor Ikaruga (2001) reduced the idea to something almost austere: your ship switches between two polarities, absorbs same-colour bullets, does extra damage to the opposite colour, and chains score by destroying enemies in groups of three matching colours. The result is a shooter where the bullets are simultaneously the threat and the ammunition.
The important structural point is that scoring layers are optional. A player can ignore them and still finish. That is a rare and useful piece of design: two audiences, one game, no difficulty setting.
Danmaku: when density became the point
The style most people now call bullet hell — danmaku, meaning barrage or curtain of bullets — took shape in Japanese arcades through the 1990s as hardware finally allowed hundreds of sprites on screen at once.
Toaplan's Batsugun (1993) is commonly credited as the bridge between the older style and the new one, and when Toaplan closed, its staff scattered into several studios that went on to define the form. Cave was one of them, and its DonPachi (1995) and DoDonPachi (1997) set the template that most later danmaku follows.
The design innovation that made it work is counter-intuitive and easy to miss: the player's vulnerable area shrank. Rather than the whole ship sprite being lethal to touch, only a small point near its centre counts. Once that is true, a gap a few pixels wide is a real, usable route, and a screen that looks completely impassable becomes navigable. Density stopped being a difficulty multiplier and became a readability device — slower, denser patterns give you more information about where the gap is than a handful of fast shots ever did.
Several games in this lineage added grazing, which awards score for passing close to bullets without being hit, formalising the idea that proximity is a skill rather than a mistake.
The style also escaped commercial arcades entirely. Touhou Project, made largely by a single developer working as Team Shanghai Alice, moved to Windows in 2002 and built a large independent scene around games distributed outside the traditional publishing route.
What happened when the arcade went away
The coin-operated arcade declined, and the genre lost the venue it was designed for. What it did not lose was its unit of play: a run that lasts a few minutes, ends decisively, and invites an immediate retry.
That unit turned out to be extremely well suited to a device you pull out of your pocket. Touch controls also changed the input in an interesting way — dragging a ship with one finger removes the deadzone and the digital-direction problem of a stick, at the cost of your thumb covering part of the screen. Most modern mobile shooters answer that by keeping the player's ship near the bottom of the display and moving the interesting information upward.

What never changed
Five decades, four hardware generations, two continents and at least three complete rethinks of what difficulty means. Through all of it, the shoot 'em up has been a game about occupying the right square metre of screen at the right moment, with a gun attached mostly to give you something to do while you get there.
Everything else — the power meters, the chains, the polarities, the curtains of thousands of bullets — is elaboration on the moment in 1978 when a row of aliens got one step closer and you had to decide which way to move.
