That sentence separates combat sports drafting from every other kind. In a team sport, a better roster is a better roster and the model says so. In a fight, the relationship between two competitors is not a ranking — it is a matchup, and a matchup can invert a ratings advantage. The game is explicit about this: power, defence, cardio, reach, grappling and fight IQ all feed the result, so a stylistic edge can outweigh a ratings edge.
Once you accept that, the entire drafting logic changes.
The board is not a ladder
Team drafting is fundamentally about coverage: fill each slot with someone suited to it, and do not leave holes. That framework does not transfer here, because there are no slots. What you are covering instead is matchup space.
Think about what a ranking actually assumes. It assumes that if A is better than B and B is better than C, then A is better than C. Style-based resolution breaks that assumption on purpose, which is why "styles make fights" is a cliché in the sport rather than a marketing line. A grappler who dismantles a striker can be dismantled in turn by a different striker with the tools to keep it standing.
The practical consequence for a drafter is closer to portfolio construction than to team building. A stable made of one archetype is not a strong stable — it is a stable with one predictable weakness repeated several times. When it meets the thing it does not handle, it does not lose one fight. It loses the same fight over and over.

Two sports, two simulators
The game does not run one model with a cosmetic switch. Mixed martial arts and boxing are simulated separately, and the difference is not trivial.
How a mixed martial arts bout resolves
The MMA simulator ends bouts by knockout, technical knockout, submission or decision, weighing striking, wrestling, takedowns, submissions and ground control.
The important structural feature is the number of ways a fight can end. A fighter can be excellent in one phase and vulnerable in another, and because the bout can be decided in any phase, a specialist carries both a high ceiling and a specific exposure. Drafting an outstanding grappler is drafting a fighter whose results depend heavily on whether the fight goes where he wants it.
How a boxing bout resolves
The boxing simulator adds draws and judges' scorecards, and looks at hand speed, power, defence, footwork and ring control.
Two consequences follow. First, there is a third outcome — a draw is neither a win nor a loss, and in a game built around an unbeaten record, a draw is a different kind of event from a defeat. Second, decisions on scorecards mean that fights which do not end early are resolved on accumulated advantage rather than on a single decisive moment, which rewards a different profile: consistency and control rather than one-shot capability.
The design choice to separate the two is the right one. Collapsing them into a single model would have to discard either submissions or scorecards, and both are load-bearing parts of their sport.
Eras and weight classes are constraints, not flavour
The pool spans eras, countries and divisions, and it is easy to read that as variety. It is better read as a set of constraints on what your roster can actually do.
Weight class in particular is not a preference. A fighter is only usable in the situations their division allows, which means a stable that is deep in one division and empty in another has a coverage problem regardless of how good the fighters are. When you are drafting for a tournament or a bracket, division depth is a real constraint on your options, and noticing it late is expensive.
Era adds a different texture. Drafting across eras is one of the genuine pleasures of a fictional pool — it is a comparison you can only make in a simulation, because it never happens in reality. It is worth being clear-eyed about that: cross-era matchups are interesting precisely because they are unanswerable outside a model.
What the simulators assume
Every result the game produces is a model's output, and it is worth stating the boundaries plainly.
The fighters are fictional and generated inside the game. The game is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any real promotion, sanctioning body, event or athlete. No result describes, predicts or relates to any real bout, and nothing in the app is usable as an indication of how a real fight would go. It is not, and is not intended as, guidance about any real-world event.
Inside the model, the assumptions are the ones described above: attributes and styles interact, the interaction can override a ratings gap, and the sport's own rules determine which outcomes are possible. That is a design decision, and it is what makes the drafting worth thinking about. A model where the higher number always won would be a sorting exercise.
The 40-0 record the game is built around — forty fights without a loss — is the target, not the expectation. Getting a stable there is the whole challenge, and falling short is the normal result.
GM Mode and the ranking system
Beyond drafting, GM Mode runs the business side: signing fighters, managing contracts, and moving contenders toward title shots, with your decisions feeding back into the rankings.
This is where the genre's usual management tensions appear in an unusual form. In a team sport, a roster decision affects a shared outcome. Here, each fighter has their own trajectory, and a matchmaking decision is a resource allocation: the opponent you choose for a contender is simultaneously a risk you are taking with an asset and an opportunity you are creating.
That produces a genuinely different set of questions from team management. Do you move a fighter quickly and accept the exposure, or build carefully and spend time you may not have? Do you protect a valuable record or test it? Single-sport drafts are the best place to learn. Mixing pools is more interesting and also more complicated, because you are reasoning about two resolution systems at once. - When two fighters are close, compare profiles rather than totals. The overall number is exactly the thing that hides the difference that decides the fight.
