Plus/minus counts what happened while a player was on the ice, and attributes all of it to that player. That sentence contains both why the statistic became popular — it is easy to compute and easy to explain — and why it is unreliable.
What it actually counts
At even strength (and when short-handed), a goal scored while you are on the ice is +1 and a goal conceded is −1. Power-play goals for are typically excluded, so a player who plays heavy power-play minutes gets no credit for that production in this number.
Six people are on the ice for each of those events. The statistic hands the whole result to each of them individually.
The three distortions
Teammate quality. Playing alongside strong linemates raises your figure without you doing anything differently. This is the largest single distortion and it is not small — a mid-tier player promoted to a top line will typically see their number improve immediately.
Goaltending. Goals against are partly a goaltender's responsibility. A skater in front of a goalie having a poor season absorbs that in their own number, which is a strange thing for an individual statistic to do.
Deployment. This is the distortion people underestimate most. Coaches choose where and against whom players start shifts. A defensive specialist who begins most shifts in their own zone against the opposition's best line faces more chances against and fewer for. Their number will be worse than a sheltered offensive player's, for the same quality of play — in fact, precisely because they are trusted with the harder job.

The statistics that hold up better

Time on ice deserves the attention it rarely gets. Coaches change it constantly, based on form, matchup and trust. A player whose ice time is climbing is being told something by the staff that no counting statistic will tell you for another two months. In a career simulation, it is the earliest available signal that your development is working.
Faceoff percentage is the cleanest individual number in the sport, because a faceoff is a repeated, isolated, one-on-one event. It only applies to centres, which limits its use, but for them it is unusually honest.
Reading a season honestly
A workable procedure, whether you are evaluating a real player, a generated one in a draft pool, or yourself:
- Establish the role first. Is this a scoring role or a defensive one? Sheltered or difficult deployment?
- Read counting statistics against that role. Twenty points from a defensive forward and twenty from a first-line winger are not the same twenty points.
- Check time on ice for the trend. Direction matters more than level.
- Treat plus/minus as a line-level hint, not a player-level verdict.
- Ignore short samples. Ten games of hockey tell you almost nothing; the variance is enormous.

What this means in a simulation
In 84-0 Hockey Draft & GM Manager, you are evaluating generated players from their attributes rather than from a statistical history, which removes most of these distortions at the point of selection — but reintroduces them the moment your roster starts playing, because your own players' numbers will be shaped by how you deploy them.
The practical consequence for a GM: do not evaluate your own signings by their raw output in a role you assigned them. If you put a defensive specialist in a shutdown role, their point total will be low by construction. That is your decision showing up in their statistics.
