Put a screenshot of a classic arcade shooter next to a screenshot of a danmaku game and the second one looks like the first one turned up. More bullets, more colours, more chaos. The obvious conclusion is that bullet hell is the hard version.

It is not. It is a different game wearing the same clothes, and the thing that separates them is not on the screen at all — it is the size of the part of your ship that can be hit.

The hitbox is the whole argument

In a classic shoot 'em up, the vulnerable area is roughly the ship you can see. Clip a bullet with a wingtip and you die. That places a hard ceiling on how many projectiles the designer can put in front of you, because a large target needs a large gap, and large gaps need a sparse screen.

In danmaku, the vulnerable area is a small point near the ship's centre — often a few pixels across, and frequently drawn on screen so you can see exactly where it is. Everything else is decoration that bullets pass straight through.

Read that table as cause and effect rather than as two lists. Slow bullets exist in danmaku because small gaps are usable; small gaps are usable because the hitbox is a point; the hitbox is a point because the designer wanted hundreds of bullets. Pull on any one of them and the rest come with it.

Density is information, not difficulty

Here is the part that surprises people who have only watched the genre rather than played it.

Four fast bullets fired directly at your current position are, moment for moment, harder than a hundred slow ones in a rotating spiral. The four give you almost no time and almost no information — they arrive at the speed of your reflexes and there is nothing to read. The hundred are moving slowly enough that the shape of the pattern is visible while it develops, the gaps are geometric and repeatable, and you can decide where you intend to be two seconds from now.

Density is closer to a legibility tool than a cruelty tool. A dense pattern makes its own structure obvious. That is why experienced players describe danmaku screens as calm, and why a beginner watching the same screen sees noise: the structure is there, and reading it is the skill being taught.

Classic shooters do the opposite. They take away information deliberately. A sparse screen of fast, aimed shots gives you nothing to plan with, so you are being tested on how quickly you can respond to something you did not see coming.

The two techniques that do not transfer

Because the tests are different, the techniques are different, and each one is close to useless in the other subgenre.

Streaming (danmaku)

Most danmaku enemies fire aimed shots — projectiles launched at wherever you were standing at the moment of firing. If you sit still, they converge on you. If you sprint across the screen, they spread out into a wall.

The answer is to move in a steady sequence of small steps in one direction. Each shot is aimed at where you just were, so they gather into a trailing line behind you rather than a spread around you. You travel slowly across the screen, dragging a stream of dead bullets, and when you run out of room you make a single sharp turn through the gap the stream created.

Streaming is patient, unglamorous and the single highest-value habit in the subgenre. It also does very little in a classic shooter, where projectiles are fast enough that they have already arrived by the time a stream would have formed.

Micro-adjustment under time pressure (classic)

Classic shooters reward a completely different motor habit: staying loose, keeping your ship in open space, and making a single small correction the instant something changes. There is rarely a route to plan, because the threat resolves faster than planning takes. What matters is that you were not already committed to a movement when it appeared.

Players who come to a classic shooter from danmaku tend to over-plan and get hit while executing a route that was already invalid. Players who go the other way tend to twitch, and twitching in a dense field means crossing bullets you had already avoided.

Macro-dodging and micro-dodging

There is a useful vocabulary here that applies to both subgenres and gets used mostly in danmaku circles.

Macro-dodging is choosing which region of the screen to be in before a pattern develops — reading a boss's wind-up and moving to the half of the arena the attack will not cover. It is decided seconds ahead and it is where most of the survival comes from.

Micro-dodging is the small corrections inside a pattern once you are already committed to a region. It is what everyone thinks the genre is, and it is the less important of the two.

The general rule is that a player who dies during micro-dodging usually made the mistake during macro-dodging. Being in a bad third of the screen when a pattern starts cannot be fixed by good hands afterwards. Resources: the other structural difference

Classic shooters generally treat your life bar as the resource. You have some number of chances, and a mistake costs one.

Danmaku typically adds a second, spendable resource — a screen-clearing panic option that also usually cancels the bullets currently in flight. The presence of that option restructures the whole risk calculation, because a mistake is no longer necessarily fatal; it is expensive. Play then becomes a question of whether the current situation is worth the spend, which is a decision the classic subgenre mostly does not offer.

There is a well-documented psychological trap attached to any charged resource: you save it for a moment worthy of it, and the moment that finally qualifies is the one that already killed you. Whatever a given game calls its defensive option, it is worth nothing while it sits unused.

Scoring: where both subgenres get strange

Once a player can survive a game reliably, the game stops being about survival, and both traditions responded by building an optional second game on top.

Chain scoring — destroying enemies in quick enough succession to hold a multiplier — is the common form. Its important property is that the safe route through a wave and the high-scoring route through it are deliberately different, so players set their own difficulty by choosing how greedy to be.

Some designs pushed this into the pattern itself. Ikaruga, released by Treasure in 2001, gives the player a ship that switches between two polarities: it absorbs bullets of its own colour, does extra damage to the opposite one, and scores by destroying enemies in same-colour groups of three. The bullets are simultaneously the threat and the ammunition, and a screen full of them can be a resource rather than a problem depending on which polarity you are currently in.

Danmaku added grazing, which awards score for passing close to a bullet without touching it. That is only possible because the hitbox is a point — with a ship-sized hitbox there is no meaningful gap between "near" and "hit". It is the clearest illustration of how one design decision propagates through everything.

So which should you play?

The honest framing is that neither is the advanced version of the other, so pick by what you want the game to demand.

Choose classic if you want short decisions, immediate feedback, and a game you can play badly and still enjoy. It is more forgiving of divided attention, which matters on a phone.

Choose danmaku if you like the idea of a screen you learn to read like a map, and you are willing to spend the first several hours being genuinely bad at it. The payoff is a specific and unusual feeling — calm inside something that looks like chaos — and nothing else in games produces it in quite the same way.

Choose either if what you actually want is patterns that reward learning. That property is not owned by a subgenre. It comes from three things: a pattern telegraphs before it arrives, it behaves the same way every time, and a survivable route existed before the shot was fired. A game with those three is worth your time at any density.
