Word puzzles feel like memory and are mostly search. The answer is usually a word you already know; the difficulty is finding it in the space of words you know. Improving at the search is faster than improving your vocabulary.
Letter frequency is very uneven
English does not use its letters equally. A small group — E, T, A, O, I, N and S among them — accounts for a large share of ordinary text, while Q, X, J and Z appear rarely.
The strategic consequence in games where you probe for letters:
A guess of a common letter eliminates more possibilities on average than a guess of a rare one.
If you are asking "is there an E?", you are asking about a letter present in a large fraction of candidate words. If you are asking about a Z, you are asking about one present in very few — and a "no" tells you almost nothing, because you expected a no.
The rule: open with high-frequency letters. Save rare letters for when you have narrowed the field enough that a rare letter is plausible.
Vowels are the fastest structural clue
Most English words have vowels in a limited set of positions, and vowel placement tells you a great deal about a word's shape before you know any of its letters.
A useful early move in most word puzzles: establish the vowels first. Knowing that a five-letter word has vowels in positions two and four eliminates an enormous proportion of the possibility space, far more than knowing a single consonant.
Pattern chunks beat individual letters
English is full of recurring pieces, and recognising them converts a letter-by-letter problem into a much smaller pattern-matching one.
Endings: -ING, -ION, -TION, -ED, -LY, -NESS, -MENT. Beginnings: UN-, RE-, IN-, DIS-, PRE-. Pairs that travel together: TH, CH, SH, QU, CK, NG.
Spotting one of these does two things at once: it fills several positions, and it constrains what can go around it. QU is the extreme case — a Q is almost always followed by a U, so finding one gives you two letters.
Solving an anagram systematically
Staring at a jumble of letters is the least efficient method. A procedure that works:
1. Separate vowels from consonants. Count each. The ratio tells you roughly what shape of word you are looking for.
2. Look for a familiar ending. Do the letters contain -ING, -ED, -ION, -ER? If so, set those aside and solve a shorter problem.
3. Look for pairs. TH, CH, QU. These almost always belong together.
4. Build from a stem. Pick the most constrained set of letters and construct outward, rather than trying to see the whole word at once.
5. Rearrange physically. Writing the letters in a circle, or in a different order, breaks the fixed mental image that keeps you seeing the same non-word.
That last one is not a trick — it works because the presented order anchors your perception, and disrupting it lets you see other groupings.

Medium-length words are frequently the easiest, because they constrain the space substantially while still containing recognisable structure. Very short words are surprisingly hard: there is little to work with, and obscure three-letter words are common in puzzle dictionaries.
Does vocabulary matter?
Yes, and less than people assume.
A large vocabulary is only useful if you can search it. Most puzzle failures are not "I did not know that word" but "I knew that word and did not think of it".
The techniques above improve retrieval, which is the actual bottleneck. Where domain vocabulary comes in
Themed word games add a second layer: the answer space is restricted to a subject.
That is easier and harder at once. Easier, because the field is smaller. Harder, because the specific terminology has to be known — a general vocabulary does not include the specialist words.
