There is no multiplier, which is why the numbers cluster around 1.00 rather than around 3 or 4 like ERA. A WHIP of 1.00 means one baserunner per inning allowed by walk or hit.
The calculation
A pitcher throws 180 innings, allowing 160 hits and 45 walks.
160 + 45 = 205 205 ÷ 180 = 1.14
What WHIP fixes about ERA
The main problem with ERA is that it depends on the order in which things happen. Three singles in one inning score a run; three singles spread across three innings usually do not. Identical pitching, different ERA.
WHIP does not care. Three singles are three singles wherever they land, so it is a sequencing-independent measure of how often a pitcher lets someone on base.
It also sidesteps two of ERA's other problems:
- Inherited runners. ERA charges a starter for runners who score after they leave. WHIP records only what the pitcher themselves allowed.
- Scorer judgement. ERA depends on the official scorer's ruling on whether a run was earned. WHIP counts walks and hits, both of which are unambiguous.

What WHIP misses
It treats all hits as equal. This is the big one. Nine singles and nine home runs across the same innings produce the same WHIP and wildly different results. A pitcher who allows a lot of contact but very little damage looks identical to one who is being hit hard.
It excludes hit batters and errors. A batter hit by a pitch reaches base and does not count. Neither does a runner reaching on an error. WHIP is not "baserunners allowed" — it is specifically walks and hits.
It says nothing about strikeouts. Two pitchers with identical WHIPs, one striking out many batters and one relying on contact, have different risk profiles going forward. The strikeout pitcher is generally more robust to a poor defence.
Reading the two together
The combination is more informative than either alone.

The middle two rows are where the analysis lives. A pitcher with a 2.80 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP is walking a tightrope, and tightropes usually end. A pitcher with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP has been unlucky, or has a home-run problem that WHIP is hiding.
Using it to evaluate a draft pool
In 162-0 Baseball Draft & GM Team you are evaluating generated players from attributes rather than from a statistical record, which removes the noise problem at the point of selection. But once your roster is playing, the same reasoning applies to your own pitchers:
- Prefer sequencing-independent measures when judging whether a pitcher is performing. WHIP, strikeout rate and walk rate all qualify. ERA does not.
- Give reliever numbers wide error bars. A small innings total makes any rate statistic noisy.
- Watch home runs separately. They are the events WHIP is blindest to and the events a defence cannot help with.

A note on comparison
There is no universal "good" WHIP, for the same reason there is no universal good ERA: it depends on the scoring environment. In a league where hits are plentiful, everyone's WHIP is higher. Compare a pitcher to their own league, or to the other pitchers in your own simulated season, rather than to a remembered number.
