Knowing which colour to use and getting it cleanly onto the page are different skills, and the second one has a short list of specific problems that everybody hits in the same order. Pale seams around every fill. A bucket that floods the entire image. Shading that looks correct in isolation and wrong in place. A finished page that somehow reads as grey.
All four have concrete causes. None of them require talent to fix.
The pale halo is anti-aliasing, and it is not a bug
Tap fill inside a region and you will often see a thin light line surviving between your colour and the black outline. It looks like sloppy work. It is a direct and unavoidable consequence of how the line art was drawn.
A perfectly hard black line on a pixel grid produces visible stair-stepping on every diagonal. To avoid that, drawing tools use anti-aliasing: the pixels along the edge of a line are rendered as partial blends between the line colour and whatever is behind it, so a diagonal reads as smooth at normal viewing distance.
Those blend pixels are neither line nor background. They are somewhere in between.
A flood fill works by starting where you tapped and spreading outward across pixels that match, stopping when it reaches something that does not. The semi-transparent blend pixels do not match, so the fill stops just short of them — leaving a ring of the original blend colour, which against your new fill reads as a pale halo.
Three responses, in order of how often they are the right one:
- Ignore it. At the size the picture will actually be looked at, a one-pixel seam is invisible. Zooming to five times normal size and being annoyed by something nobody will ever see is a way of not finishing pictures.
- Brush the seam. Zoom in, take the same colour, and run the brush along the inside of the outline. This is the reliable fix and it takes seconds per region.
- Choose darker fills near the lines. A seam between black line art and a dark fill is far less visible than a seam between black line art and a pale one. If you know a region will show its edges, biasing it darker hides the problem for free.
And when the fill floods everything
Same mechanism, opposite failure. A flood fill spreads until it hits a boundary, so if there is a single-pixel gap anywhere in the outline of a region, the fill escapes through it and keeps going.
Undo, then follow the outline of the region at high zoom looking for the break. The usual suspects are hair tips, fingers, the point where two lines nearly touch, and anywhere the artist deliberately left a line open for style. Close the gap with the brush and fill again.
Flats first, always
The most consequential habit in the whole activity is boring: put down every flat base colour before you shade anything.
The reason is that colour decisions are relational. A shadow tone that looks right against a white background will look wrong once the region next to it is filled, because how light something appears depends on what surrounds it. Shading an isolated region is therefore judging a decision with most of its information missing, and the near-universal result is that the shading gets redone.
A flats pass also gives you the single most useful checkpoint available: with the whole picture blocked in and nothing else, you can see the value structure. Squint at it. If everything merges into one mass, fix that now — while it costs one fill per region — rather than after you have shaded every individual area.
Cel shading and soft shading are different decisions
They are usually presented as a skill ladder, with cel shading as the beginner option. They are not. They are two different questions.
Cel shading asks what shape is the shadow? You pick a small number of tones — often just a base and one darker partner — and draw the shadow as a deliberate region with a hard edge. Everything inside the edge is one flat tone. Because the edge is drawn rather than calculated, the shading carries information about form the way a line drawing does, and a confidently drawn shadow shape reads as more solid than a hesitant gradient.
Soft shading asks how fast does the light fall off? Instead of an edge, there is a transition, which means you need a way of laying colour at partial strength.
That second requirement is worth being blunt about. A toolset built around solid fills and a hard brush naturally does cel shading well and soft shading badly, and fighting it produces a page that looks like neither. Anime and manga styling has always been built on flat tones with clear edges, so leaning into cel shading on a hard-edged toolset is not a compromise. It is the style working with the tool.
A workable cel shading pass
- Decide the light direction and say it out loud. "Light from the upper left." Every shadow after this answers to that sentence, and consistency in lighting is most of what makes a picture look deliberate.
- One partner tone per region. For each major area, pick a second colour in the same hue family that is clearly darker. Same family, different value — not a different hue.
- Draw the shadow shape on the side away from the light. Under the chin. Beneath the fringe. On the underside of a sleeve. Along the lower edge of each hair clump.
- Keep the edges confident. A hard edge drawn in one stroke reads better than one nibbled at repeatedly.
Two tones plus consistent direction will carry an entire picture. A third tone is a refinement, not a requirement.
Contact shadows earn more than cast shadows
If you only add one thing beyond flats, make it the dark line where two objects touch.
Where a collar meets a neck, where hair rests on a shoulder, where a sleeve meets a wrist, light is blocked from almost every direction, so those seams are the darkest part of the picture by a wide margin. Adding a narrow darker band exactly at the contact does more for a sense of solidity than a large, carefully rendered cast shadow anywhere else.
It is also cheap. These are small areas, they follow existing lines, and they cannot really be got wrong — if two things are touching, there is a shadow there.
Rim light: the trick worth learning early
A thin strip of a lighter, often warmer colour along the edge of a subject on the side facing away from the main light. It reads as light spilling around the form from behind.
Rim light does something no amount of shading does: it separates the subject from the background along a hard edge, which makes a character sit in a scene rather than on it. It works especially well when the background is dark and the rim is bright, and it is a single thin stroke per edge.
Use it sparingly and only along edges the light could actually reach. A rim on every silhouette makes the figure look like it is glowing, which is fine as a deliberate effect and distracting as an accident.
Gradients and textures are surface, not colour
Gradient and textured colour sets — chalk, glass-like, mosaic — change how a surface behaves rather than what hue it is, and they solve one specific problem: a large flat region that looks empty.
Skies, walls, dresses and open backgrounds are the natural candidates. A single texture across one large area gives the eye something to rest on without adding a decision to the picture.
The failure mode is obvious once stated. Two textured regions compete; three make the picture look like a collage. One textured area per image, used on the biggest empty shape, is almost always the correct dose.
Zoom discipline
The mistake is working zoomed in and judging zoomed in.
Detail passes require magnification, but a picture is looked at whole. Every so often, snap back to full view and look at what you have. Half the time the thing you spent five minutes perfecting is invisible, and the thing that is actually wrong is a large shape you have not been looking at.
The rhythm that works: block in at full view, refine at zoom, judge at full view. Never make a decision about a colour while looking at it magnified, because at that size you are seeing a swatch rather than a picture.
Rescuing a muddy page
When a finished page looks flat and grey, run these three checks in this order. The order matters, because the first one fixes the most cases and the third one fixes almost none.
1. Check the value spread. Squint until detail disappears. If the hair, clothing and background all read as the same grey, that is your problem, and no hue change will solve it. Push the largest region clearly lighter or clearly darker and the whole image will resolve.
2. Check for opposing hues at similar saturation. Colours from opposite sides of the wheel neutralise each other toward grey when they meet at similar intensity. If two large adjacent regions are doing that, drop the saturation of one and let the other be the loud one.
3. Only then change hues. By this point you rarely need to. Most pictures described as having "the wrong colours" turn out to have acceptable colours in the wrong value arrangement, and swapping hues without fixing that just produces a differently muddy picture.
Doing this with a small toolset
None of the above requires an elaborate application. It requires a fill, a brush, an eraser and the patience to lay flats before shading.
