About this app

What to expect

Learn Cantonese for Beginners treats Cantonese as its own spoken language rather than a version of Mandarin, which changes both what the course teaches and the order it teaches it in. The path runs through 12 units, opening with greetings and introductions and working out to family, food, shopping, numbers, money, dates and time, transport, work, school, health, emergencies and social situations. Traditional Chinese characters and Jyutping appear together from the first lesson, so you are reading and pronouncing at the same time.

Pronunciation gets its own foundation. You work through Cantonese initials, finals and syllables, then tone contrasts, so you can hear why the same syllable can carry different meanings. Grammar is taught on Cantonese terms too — word order, pronouns, classifiers, possession, negation and aspect markers, plus questions, comparisons, adjective placement, sentence-final particles and the errors English speakers reliably make. Where your device supports Cantonese speech, the app uses it and falls back clearly when it does not.

Review is what holds the course together. Daily Review, Speed Run Review, Mistake Rescue, Listening Blitz, Sentence Builder, Match Blitz and Dictation Mode all draw on material you have already covered, and a missed-questions list collects what you keep getting wrong. Nothing blocks you after a mistake, because there is no hearts or lives system, and progress for the Cantonese and English directions is stored separately so switching does not mix your lessons.

Key features

Why you'll keep coming back

01

Twelve structured units

A single path from greetings and introductions out to family, food, money, transport, work, school, health and emergencies.

02

Sounds and tones first

Initials, finals, syllables and tone contrasts come before conversation, so pronunciation is a foundation rather than a later correction.

03

Traditional characters with Jyutping

High-frequency characters are taught inside words, phrases and sentences, with notes on spoken Cantonese, written Cantonese and Standard Written Chinese.

04

Grammar on its own terms

Word order, classifiers, possession, negation, aspect markers, questions and sentence-final particles, without bending Cantonese into English or Mandarin rules.

05

Review modes that pull from your history

Daily Review, Speed Run Review, Mistake Rescue, Listening Blitz, Sentence Builder, Match Blitz and Dictation Mode, plus your learned words and missed questions.

Learn Cantonese for Beginners — FAQs

Is Learn Cantonese for Beginners free?
Yes, it is free to download on Google Play and supported by ads. There are optional in-app purchases, and some locked lessons can be opened with a rewarded ad when one is available.
Is this Cantonese or Mandarin?
Cantonese. The course is built around Cantonese pronunciation, grammar and usage, and it uses traditional Chinese characters with Jyutping rather than Mandarin material.
Do I need to read Chinese characters to start?
No. Jyutping is shown alongside the characters from the beginning, and high-frequency traditional characters are introduced gradually inside words, phrases and sentences.
Can Cantonese speakers use it to learn English?
Yes. The English-from-Cantonese direction is a separate course with its own progress, so moving between the two does not mix lessons or review questions.
Will I be fluent by the end?
No app can promise that. This one is built to give you a beginner foundation — pronunciation, core vocabulary, working grammar and enough phrases for a first real conversation.
